Scientific Name: Sternotherus carinatus
Razor Back Musk Turtles are native to the southern United States from Oklahoma through Texas and Mississippi. They are true are a truly aquatic turtle that is very hardy. These carnivorous turtles are most active at dusk and dawn.
Maximum size: 6”
Lighting: Full spectrum fluorescent UV bulbs and a basking light are required.
Temperature range: 72° –80F° water temperature
Food: Their diet consists of dead fish, snails, clams, crickets, and earthworms. Specialized pelted foods for carnivorous aquatic turtles are also a good choice.
Water: Clean dechlorinated water with a depth of 3- 5” is required.
Housing/Habitat: An aquarium with a sand substrate deep enough to facilitate burrowing and a submersible heater to provide the proper temperature. Landscape to provide plenty of hiding places for the turtle. A land area for is essential for egg laying and may be beneficial to Musk Turtles. A good filter will keep the water clean and decrease the frequency of required water changes.
